Neolithic means belonging to the last part of the Stone Age, about 10,000 years ago (the exact dates shift from place to place). That was when people began to farm, keep animals, live together in small villages, and make better stone tools — smoother and more carefully shaped than before. You will meet this word in history class and in museums; it is a school-and-science word, not a word for chatting. People also use it as a noun: “the Neolithic” means that whole stretch of time. Though actually, the name is quite young. An Englishman, John Lubbock, coined it in 1865, when scholars were cutting the old Stone / Bronze / Iron picture into finer pieces. The people of that age never called themselves Neolithic.
