In British English, nelly turns up in the set phrase not on your nelly, which means you are definitely not going to do something — a firm, colourful no. It is informal and a bit old-fashioned; you hear it from older British speakers more than from young ones, often with a laugh. You would not write it in a serious letter. The joke inside the phrase is old Cockney rhyming slang: Nelly Duff stood for puff, and puff here meant the breath of life, so 'not on your puff' meant 'not while I still breathe'. Nelly itself is also a woman's name, which is where the Nelly in Nelly Duff comes from. Students almost never need the word alone; they need the whole phrase.
