Picture your own house, and then the house right next to it. A neighbour is simply whoever, or whatever, sits in that next spot. The word promises nothing about liking them or even knowing them — only that they are the next one along. That is why it stretches so easily from the house next door, up to the country across the border, and down to the person in the next seat.
