If a horse neighs, it makes that long, high, rolling sound — not a snort, and not the quiet little nicker some horses use with people they know. The sound itself is also called a neigh. The word is very old English, and it is a bit like the sound, which is why it is easy to remember. You will see it in farm stories and horse books more than in city talk. People sometimes joke that a person “neighed” if they laughed in a loud, horse-like way; that is playful stretching, not the real meaning. The past tense is neighed; the -gh is silent, as in high.

組成Inherited from Middle English neyen, from Old English hnǣġan, from Proto-West Germanic *hnaijan, from Proto-Germanic *hnajjaną (“to neigh”).
