Neddy is a friendly name for a donkey, the kind you meet in children’s stories and old nursery talk, not the word a farmer would use today. It is Ned — a short, homey form of the name Edward — with a soft -y on the end, the same gentle ending you hear in doggy or birdie. Grown-ups almost never say it now except when they are reading to a child, or being playful on purpose. In a story it is often written with a capital N, as if the donkey were a person with a name.
