If you are nearsighted, your eyes can see things that are close — a book, a phone, a face across the table — quite well, but things farther away look soft and fuzzy. The medical name is myopia. This is the usual American word for that eye problem. British English more often says short-sighted for the same thing. A lot of students are nearsighted; glasses or contact lenses pull the far world back into focus. People do sometimes stretch it, the way they stretch short-sighted, to mean someone who only sees what is in front of them and does not think about later. The home meaning, though, is still about eyes: you cannot see clearly unless the thing is close.
