1. 1

Nazareth is a town in Galilee, in the north of Israel. In the New Testament of the Bible, Jesus lived there as a boy, with Mary and Joseph. That is why many Christians visit it, and why people often say “Jesus of Nazareth.” It is a real town today, not only a name in a story. The English name came through Latin and Greek from a Hebrew name; scholars are not sure what that Hebrew name first meant. When someone is called a Nazarene, they are being named as a person from this town — or, in the Bible, as Jesus himself.
