Naugahyde is a brand name for a kind of fake leather: cloth with a plastic surface made to look like animal skin, used to cover chairs, sofas, and car seats. In American English people sometimes say Naugahyde for any vinyl leather of this type, even when the piece was not made by that company — the way some people say for any tissue. It is not real hide from an animal; it is plastic on fabric. The name was invented in the 1930s from Naugatuck, a town in Connecticut in the United States where it was first made, plus hide (the skin of an animal used as leather). The company used to joke that it came from an animal called a Nauga. That was an , not a real creature. In Taiwan you will almost never hear the brand; people say 合成皮 or 人造皮 instead. In English, especially American English about furniture, the brand name still turns up.
