- 1
Natty describes clothes, or a person in them, that look neat and fashionable in a tidy, careful way — a well-cut jacket, polished shoes, a small sharp hat — not loud or messy fashion. It started as slang. Where it came from is not settled: it is perhaps related to natural, and some people have also tied it to knotty; treat both as “perhaps,” not as a clean family tree. The word feels a bit old-fashioned and more British than American. You will still meet “a natty dresser” in books. Today people more often say smart, stylish, or sharp. It is a compliment about looks, not about behaviour.
