A nasturtium is a garden plant with round, shield-like leaves and bright flowers in orange, yellow, or red. grow it for colour, and the leaves and flowers have a peppery taste, so people also put them in salads. It is an ordinary garden word, not a scientific one you need every day. Though actually, the old Latin name was also used for watercress, a different peppery plant that grows in water — so the history of the name is a little mixed. In English today, nasturtium means this garden flower, not watercress.
