NASDAQ began as a computer system that showed the prices of shares, especially in smaller and newer companies, that dealers bought and sold with each other over a national network rather than on a trading floor. The name first stood for National Association of Securities Dealers Quotations. Though actually, today people use NASDAQ to mean the stock exchange itself, and many of the world’s biggest technology companies list there — so it is no longer only “small and new.” In news you hear the NASDAQ the way you hear the stock market, often as a number that went up or down. It is different from the New York Stock Exchange, which grew out of a trading floor, and different from the Dow Jones, which is an index (a number), not an exchange.
