    Nary means “not one” or “not a single.” You almost always meet it in the set phrase nary a + noun: nary a cloud, nary a word, nary a sound. It is informal and a bit old-fashioned, and it sounds like American country or folksy speech — a ’s word more than a classroom word. A careful speaker today would usually say not a single or not one. Though actually, in some parts of the United States people still say it without thinking it is quaint. It is not a word you need in formal writing.
