The nape is the bottom part of the back of your neck, right where the hair ends and the neck meets the shoulders. If you lift a person’s hair at the back, the skin you see there is the nape. The natural English chunk is often the nape of the neck, not just nape by itself. It is a careful body word — in everyday talk many people just say the back of my neck. You will meet it in descriptions of haircuts, collars, and someone kissing or touching that spot.
後頸
組成From Middle English nape. Scholars are not sure where it came from. One idea: Old French hanap (a goblet), from a Germanic word for a cup, because there is a little hollow at the base of the skull. Another idea: Old French nape / nappe (a cloth), from Latin mappa (a cloth) — and if that is right, it would be a cousin of map, mop, and nappe. We cannot pick one with a straight face, so both stay as “possibly.”
