A nanny is a person, usually a woman, who is paid to take care of children in their own home — different from a , who usually only helps for a short time, a nanny often works regularly, sometimes even living with the family. The word is also used for a female goat, called a 'nanny goat,' as opposed to a male goat, a 'billy goat.' And you may hear the phrase 'nanny state,' a slightly critical way of describing a government that makes a lot of rules to protect people, as if it were treating adults like children.
