    Namibia is a country in the south-west of Africa, on the Atlantic Ocean, west of and north of South Africa. The capital is . It takes its English name from the Namib, the great desert along the coast. For a long time the place was called South West Africa, and South Africa controlled it, although the United Nations did not accept that. Namibia became independent in 1990. — the South West Africa People's Organization — led the fight for independence. A little over two million people live there. When someone says Namibia, they mean the country, not a person.
