Nahuatl is the language of the Aztec people, and of other related peoples in central Mexico. Spanish soldiers met it in the 1500s. Quite a few Mexican place names, and some English food words — chocolate, tomato, avocado — travelled out of Nahuatl into Spanish and then into English. sometimes talk as if the language died with the old Aztec empire. That is not true: more than a million people still speak forms of Nahuatl in Mexico today, in several local varieties that are not all easy to understand from one valley to the next. Scholars say Classical Nahuatl for the old written form. Aztec is the popular name for the old empire; Nahuatl is the name of the language.
