The nadir of something is the lowest, worst point it reaches — the moment when a situation seems as bad as it can get. A team can hit the nadir of a season; a country can reach the nadir of a crisis. After that, people hope the line starts to climb. The word feels formal and a little ; in easy talk you would more often say the lowest point, or rock bottom. It began as a sky word. In old astronomy the nadir is the point in the sky right under your feet, opposite the zenith, the point right above your head. English then stretched that picture to luck, history, and feeling. You almost always say the nadir of something, not just nadir on its own.
組成From Medieval Latin nadir, from Arabic naẓīr as-samt: naẓīr “counterpart, the one that matches” + as-samt “the zenith” — so “the opposite of the highest point in the sky.” English kept the sky meaning and later used the same shape for “the worst moment.”
