N'Djamena is the capital city of Chad, a country in north-central Africa. It stands by the river, close to the border with Cameroon. The name came into English from French, and the French took it from an Arabic name of a nearby village, which meant something like place of rest. Though actually, that is not the city's first famous name in European mouths. Until 1973 it was called Fort-Lamy, a colonial name. President François Tombalbaye changed it on 6 April 1973, as part of a push to use African names. In English we keep the apostrophe: N'Djamena. It is only a place name — you do not make tenses with it, and it does not mean rest in ordinary English talk.
