Myxomatosis is a disease that kills rabbits. A virus causes it. The animal's head and eyes swell, and most wild rabbits that catch it do not live. In the 1950s people in Australia let the disease loose on purpose, because rabbits were eating the land bare; it also spread in Europe. That history is part of how English speakers know the word: not from daily chat, but from farming, wildlife, and sometimes from a sad story about a pet. You will almost never hear it unless animals are the topic. It is a long science name, and nobody it. It is not a disease of people.
