Myrtle is a small evergreen tree or with shiny dark-green leaves and white flowers that smell sweet. Dark berries follow the flowers. The plant people mean in English is the Mediterranean one (Myrtus); it likes sun and has lived in gardens and in old love-stories for a very long time — the Greeks and Romans tied it to the goddess of love.
