Myrrh is a bitter, sticky resin that comes from the wounded bark of certain small trees in dry country (the kind called Commiphora, around the Horn of Africa and Arabia). People have used it for a very long time as incense, in perfume, and in old medicine. It smells warm, a little sharp, and not sweet. English speakers meet it most in the Christmas story: the wise men bring gold, , and myrrh. Say it as one syllable, like “mur.” It is a slightly old, biblical, or specialist word in everyday talk — you name it when you mean that exact resin, not any pleasant smell.

組成From Middle English mirre, from Old English myrre, from Latin myrrha, from Ancient Greek μύρρα (múrrha), from a Semitic root. Compare Arabic مُرّ (murr) and Hebrew מור (mōr), both “myrrh” and, at root, “bitterness.” The bitter taste is in the name.
