Mycology is the study of fungi: mushrooms, moulds, yeasts, and the fine threads that run through soil and wood. A mycologist might work on food (bread yeast, cheese moulds), on plant or human disease, or on forests. It is a science word, at home in textbooks and labs, not in casual chat. Fungi are not plants, though people used to group them that way; mycology sits beside , it is not the same thing. And it is not only about the mushrooms you eat — those are just the fruiting bodies you can see.
