Mwah is the sound of a kiss written down. People say it most when the kiss is an air kiss: lips purse, they make the sound, but they do not actually touch the other person’s cheek. You will see it in casual messages — “Love you, mwah!” — and you will hear it when someone is being playful, camp, or a bit theatrical. It is not a formal word and it does not belong in serious writing. Though actually, it is also how people tease a fake show of affection: a big mwah when the warmth is only for display. That joking, not-quite-sincere use is common. (In music talk, some people have also used mwah for the smooth sliding sound of a fretless bass. That is a side use; the kiss is the one students will meet.)
