A muu-muu is a long, loose dress that hangs from the shoulders and does not squeeze the waist. It comes from Hawaii. The classic one is bright, often with big flowers, and people wear it because it is cool and easy, not because it is fancy. In English you will see muu-muu, muumuu, or muʻumuʻu; they name the same dress. It is casual hot-weather clothes, though some are pretty enough for a party. Though actually, the Hawaiian name is tied to a “cut-off” style — older missionary dresses had a tight top piece, and the muu-muu left that off — but in everyday English nobody is thinking about .
