    A mutt is a dog that does not belong to one special breed — a mix. The word is informal. It can sound warm (“our old mutt”) or a little rough, depending on the voice. Everyday owners and animal shelters use it a lot; people who talk about dog shows usually say mixed-breed, which sounds more polite. Though actually, mutt did not start as a dog word. It is a short form of muttonhead, which meant a foolish person (as if someone had a sheep's head). First it was an insult for a person; later it settled on mixed dogs. Some speakers still call a person a mutt, and that is — don't copy that. For dogs, American English still uses mutt all the time.
