Muslin is a very thin cotton cloth. In the past it was much used for dresses and curtains, and also for baby clothes, because it is light and lets air through. You can sometimes see a little through it. Today sewers still use a cheap muslin to try a pattern before they cut the real fabric — that test piece is often called a muslin too — and cooks may use a muslin cloth to strain food. The name comes from Mosul, a city in what is now northern Iraq, famous for fine cotton; it reached English through Italian and French mousseline (the same name in another shape). An old book once said the name was from India; the place in the word is Mosul. It is cotton, not silk, even when it feels soft.
