Murk is thick, dirty darkness — the kind you get from smoke, dust, fog, or heavy cloud, when you cannot see far. It is a slightly or weather-report word; in everyday talk people more often say gloom, haze, or we couldn't see a thing. Though actually, murk is the thick air itself, not just night. You can walk through the murk. The adjective murky is far more common than this noun.
