In informal British English, if you call someone a muppet, you are saying they are stupid, or that they have just done something silly. It is rude, but a bit cartoonish — closer to idiot said with a sigh than to a vicious attack. It comes from The Muppets, the famous puppet characters, as if the person is as foolish as a comedy puppet. Though actually, in American English Muppet usually just means those TV characters; the you-idiot meaning is mainly British.
