To munch is to eat something with a chewing sound you can hear — chips, an apple, popcorn, nuts. It is a warm, everyday word, not a formal one. People munch snacks; they do not usually munch a quiet meal in a nice restaurant. You will often hear munch on: she sat munching on crackers. Though actually, noisy does not mean rude here. It only means the teeth make a sound. The same spelling can be a noun (a munch) for a bit of that eating, but the verb is the one you will meet first.
