Mumps is an infectious illness, caused by a virus, that makes in your neck and face swell and hurt — especially near the jaw, so chewing and swallowing hurt. It spreads through coughs and close contact, and it used to be a common childhood disease. Though actually many children now get a vaccine (often in the MMR shot), so you hear about it less. The word looks plural and always keeps that -s: you get mumps or have mumps, not “a mump.” It is ordinary medical English, not slang.
