1. 1

Mumbai is the huge city on India’s west coast, capital of Maharashtra, a major port and industrial centre, and the home of India’s big film industry (people outside India often call that Bollywood). English used to say Bombay; the official name became Mumbai in the 1990s. Though actually many people — including some Indians, and almost all older textbooks — still say Bombay. Using Mumbai is the more current choice in English, especially in the news and with Indian speakers.
