The word first appeared around 1895, coined by the American William James as a blend of multiple and universe. Though actually, James was talking about a moral and spiritual “many-worlds” picture, not superhero variants; the science-fiction sense came later. It is not the metaverse, which is a shared digital world people build on computers.
