Multifarious means “of many different kinds.” The things are not just many; they are mixed, not all the same. Duties can be multifarious. Reasons can be multifarious. A city’s voices can be multifarious. This is a word. You will meet it in essays and older or careful writing more than at the night market. A student who says “many different kinds” is already saying the same thing in words people actually use. Keep multifarious for when you are reading, or when you want a formal tone on purpose. It does not mean “confused,” and it does not mean “too many” in a complaining way — though a tired writer might make it sound like a pile. It is closer to “varied” than to “messy.” It also does not mean “bad”; a different, similar-looking word (nefarious) is the one that means wicked.
