In golf, a mulligan is a free extra shot you're allowed after a bad one, without it counting on your score — usually just a friendly rule between casual players, not real tournament rules. From this, people now use 'mulligan' more generally, , to mean a second chance or a do-over after a mistake, even outside golf.
