A mullah is a Muslim teacher of law and religion — someone trained in Islamic learning, who may teach, lead prayer, give judgments on religious law, or serve as a local scholar. The title is especially common in talk about Iran, Afghanistan, and parts of South and Central Asia. In those places it can be a respectful form of address. English news, though actually, often uses mullah more loosely, for any visible Muslim cleric, and sometimes with a political colour, as if the word itself meant “hard-line.” That is sloppy. It is not the same as imam, which points more to the person who leads prayer, and it is not a word for every Muslim teacher everywhere. Like many religious titles, it is a role and an honour in one community, and a headline shortcut in another.
