Mukluks are boots made for walking on snow. The classic kind has a thick, soft bottom and is made of animal skin — historically seal, reindeer, or other northern skins — often with fur. They come from the Arctic, from Inuit and related peoples, who needed warm, quiet boots that would not freeze hard. The boot is usually soft, not a stiff mountain boot. In shops today you will also see “mukluks” that are fashion winter boots, sometimes with rubber bottoms and fake fur; they keep the name and the look, though actually they may not be made in the old way, or of real skin. English almost always uses the word in the plural when talking about a pair, like “shoes” or “boots.”
