Muhammad is the name of the Prophet of Islam (about 570–632). He was born in (), in Arabia. Muslims believe that God spoke to him, and that those words were later written down as the Qur'an (also spelled ), the holy book of Islam. In 622 he left for because people there were treating him badly for his faith. That journey is called the Hijra (), and the Islamic calendar starts from that year. He is the central human figure in Islam — not God, but the messenger. English the name in several ways (Muhammad, Mohammed, Mohammad); Muhammad is a very common spelling today. Many boys around the world are also named Muhammad after him, so the same word can be an ordinary personal name. Though actually, when English books say “the Prophet Muhammad,” they mean this one historical person, not every man with the name.
組成From Arabic muḥammad, “praised, worthy of praise,” the passive form of a verb meaning “to praise.” It shares an Arabic root with the name Mahmud, but they are not the same name.
