A mugshot is a photograph of someone's face, taken to show clearly who they are. The best-known kind is the police photo after an arrest: the front of the face, and often the side as well. Offices, prisons, and other official places also take this kind of picture for a pass or a file. The word is informal; news writers use it a lot. Friends may joke “Don't post my mugshot” about an photo of their face, but the real home of the word is police and official records. Though actually, not every photo of a face is a mugshot. A smiling work picture, a passport photo you chose, or a selfie is not one — even if, as a joke, people call a bad face photo a mugshot.
組成mug is old slang for a person's face; shot here means a photograph, as in a camera “shot.”
