    British and informal: to study something quickly because you need it soon — usually 'mug up ON a subject' before an exam or a meeting. Close to Taiwan's 臨時抱佛腳. A bit old-fashioned now; young British people more often say 'swot up' or 'cram', though actually 'mug up' still appears in books. In India it also means learning by heart, repeating until it sticks.
