    A mudflap is a piece of rubber, or sometimes plastic, that hangs down behind a vehicle's wheel. Its job is to stop the tyre from throwing mud, water, and little stones onto the car, or onto the cars behind. You see them most on trucks and vans, hanging quite low. On some cars they are small flaps at the back of the wheel arch. Though actually, it is not the same thing as a mudguard: a mudflap hangs loose behind the wheel; a mudguard is the curved cover that sits over the wheel, like on a bicycle. American English mud flap as two words as often as one.

    A rectangular flap mounted near the wheel of a motor vehicle (especially a truck) to prevent mud or rocks from being thrown up (by the wheel), either onto the body panels or into the path of vehicles following behind.
