1. 1

A muckheap is a pile of animal waste on a farm — dung from cows or horses, usually mixed with the old straw from their , up in a corner of the yard. Farmers do this on purpose: after months of sitting and rotting, the heap turns into good that goes back onto the fields to feed the soil. So a muckheap is not rubbish, even though it smells terrible. The word is British and rural; you also see it written as two words, 'muck heap', and 'dung heap' or 'midden' mean much the same thing. Outside the farm, people use it as an insult for any place that is filthy and disorganised — 'his bedroom is a muckheap' — and sometimes for a situation that is a rotten mess. There is also a well-known image of a standing on top of the muckheap and crowing, used for someone who is very proud of being important in a very small place.
