MTV is an American television channel, started in 1981, that became famous for playing music videos all day long. For people who grew up in the 1980s and 1990s, MTV was how you found out what a band looked like and what was new; a song could become a hit simply because MTV played its video often. It made the music video into an art form and made VJs (video jockeys — the people who introduced the videos) into stars. Since then MTV has changed a lot and now shows mostly reality shows and other programmes, with very little music, which older viewers complain about constantly. The name is also used loosely as a kind of adjective for a style: 'MTV-style editing' means fast cuts, bright images, one shot never staying on screen for long. Taiwan had its own MTV channel, and note that in Taiwan in the late 1980s and 90s an 'MTV' also meant something quite different — a small shop where you rented a private room to watch a film. That local meaning is now old-fashioned but older Taiwanese people remember it well.
