MSN started as the Microsoft Network: Microsoft's own door onto the internet in the 1990s — news, email, a way to get online, like an ISP (a company that connects you to the internet). The same three letters then became the name people used for MSN Messenger, the chat program that came with it. Though actually, in real talk — especially among people who were young in the 2000s — 'MSN' almost never means 'the internet company'. It means the little window where you sent messages and waited for a friend to come online. In Taiwan that was huge: people said they were 'on MSN' the way later people say they are on LINE. Microsoft later moved the chat tool to Windows Live Messenger, then Skype, and the old MSN page became more of a news site. Young students may never have used it; their older brothers and sisters probably lived on it. So if a text says 'an ISP called MSN', that is the company sense. If someone says 'add me on MSN', that is the messenger.
組成Short for Microsoft Network: Microsoft = the company, network = their internet service. The chat tool took the same letters.
