    Mournfully is the adverb: in a very sad way, with that heavy, grieving feeling. You add -ly to mournful. So a person looks mournful (that is the face), but they look mournfully at the empty chair (that is the way they look). A dog may howl mournfully. A voice may say goodbye mournfully. Same weight as mournful — loss, not a small bad day. You can stretch it the same way as mournful, for a sad look that is not really about death. It is a little ; in speech people often just say sadly.
