Mountainous simply describes a place that has a lot of mountains — a mountainous country is one where you see tall, rocky land almost everywhere, like Nepal or much of Taiwan's east coast. People also use it about a problem or task that feels huge and hard to get through, the way climbing a real mountain would be — 'a mountainous pile of homework'.
