A mound is a small hill — a pile of earth, sand, or dirt that rises up above the ground around it. It can be made by nature or by people; a mound of dirt left after digging a hole is still a mound, and so is a small ancient hill that turns out to have graves inside it. The word is also used loosely for any pile shaped a bit like a small hill — you can say 'a mound of laundry' or 'a mound of mashed potatoes' when something is piled up high in the middle. And in baseball, the small raised piece of ground the pitcher stands on is simply called 'the mound.'
