When a bird or an animal moults, it loses old feathers or hair so that new ones can grow. Birds moult; some moult their coats when the season changes. You can also use moult as a noun: the moult is the time, or the process, when this happens. It is the normal word in biology and in ordinary talk about pets and wildlife. British spelling is moult; American English molt. Though actually, the l in the British spelling was slipped in later by mistake — people thought the word came from French, like fault and vault, but it did not. Snakes losing their skin are usually said to shed, not moult, even though the idea feels close.

組成From Middle English mouten, from an Old English verb (seen in bemutian, “to exchange for”), from Latin muto, “to move, change, exchange.” It is a doublet of mute and mutate. The l in the spelling is not original; it was added because people wrongly guessed a French origin with -l-, as in fault and vault.
