A motherless child is a child growing up without a mother. The picture is that the mother has died, and that is often what people mean. Though actually, the word is a little wider: the mother may have left, or the child may never have known her. What it points to is the gap — no mother there — not the exact reason. You will meet it in stories and in careful, serious talk. It is not a cold legal word, and it is not a joke. Adults also speak of a motherless family, or of young animals that way. The feeling is tender; people usually say it quietly.
