This word has three very different meanings, so context matters. In building, mortar is the thick paste of cement, sand, and water that sticks bricks or stones together. In cooking or old medicine, a mortar is a heavy bowl you crush things in with a stick called a pestle (mortar and pestle, for grinding or herbs). And in the military, a mortar is a short, heavy gun that shells up and over walls or hills.
