    Mordant humour, wit, or remarks are and insulting — they sting — but they are also funny. The joke ‘bites’. It is not slapstick, and it is not just rude shouting: the point is that the line is sharp and often uncomfortably true. You find the word more in books and reviews than in everyday chat. Close to biting or caustic, but mordant still says the speaker is being clever, not only cruel. (There is another, technical sense in dyeing — a chemical that helps colour stick — but that is not this use.)
